Do you have any more questions about the probate service?

How do I report the death of the account holder?

You must upload the death certificate issued by the Civil Registry through CaixaBankNow. If you are not a customer, you can do this at a branch.

You can request the death certificate here: Death Certificate.

When do I have to report the death of the account holder?

You must report the death of the account holder as soon as possible to begin the inheritance process.

How can I provide the inheritance documents to CaixaBank?

If you are a CaixaBank customer, you can start the process online Link to process inheritance.

If you are not a CaixaBank customer, you have to report the death at a CaixaBank branch (by providing the death certificate from the Civil Registry) and signing the framework contract for Wills. You can then send the documentation securely via link to the portal

How do I accept the inheritance?

To accept the inheritance, you have to show a formal document accepting the inheritance (whether a public deed of acceptance of the inheritance signed before a notary, or a private document, as required by each case). This document must be signed by all the heirs and specify in detail the assets to be distributed and the proportions corresponding to each heir.

What happens with the holder's assets after they have passed away?

Accounts and deposits: The total or proportional balance will be blocked depending on the number of account holders.

Cards: The cards for which the deceased person was a holder or beneficiary will be cancelled.

Digital banking: Access to digital banking (CaixaBankNow) will be revoked.

Direct debit bills: Basic utility bills and obligations assumed with CaixaBank will continue to be paid.

Authorisations/powers of attorney: All authorisations and powers of attorney will be cancelled.

Standing orders: These will continue to be honoured and the heirs may suspend them.

Investment products: Investment products will be blocked, and no purchases, sales, subscriptions or reimbursements will be allowed.

Insurance and pension plans: No new contributions will be accepted, only the death benefit will be paid.

What are last wills?

The Certificate of Last Will, issued by the Ministry of Justice, contains the wills made by a person, with the last one issued being the valid one. If the person did not have a will, it will also note this.

You can request the death certificate here: Certificate of Last Will.

What happens to the deceased person's pension?

The pensioner is entitled to the pension for the month of death, and their heirs will be able to access it once the probate process is completed Any pension payments made by mistake after death will be frozen so they can be returned.

How long do I have from the date of death to manage the inheritance?

It is advisable to begin the procedures as soon as possible to avoid complications and to comply with the legal deadlines established for the payment of taxes.

How are the shares or investment assets of the deceased allocated?

Once you accept the inheritance and pay the taxes, CaixaBank will issue a legal report specifying how the moneys and assets that the deceased had in the bank are distributed. For investment funds or shares, you have to sign a specific contract with CaixaBank involving the assets assigned to you.
